A staff member or parent can initiate the SST process. SST meetings deal with a broad range of concerns regarding students’ academic, behavioral, and emotional progress. The purpose of the meeting is to brainstorm ideas on how to better support the child. Meetings may result in referrals to special programs, but they more often lead to adjustments in class assignments or routines, behavior contracts, ideas for home routines, or any number of other appropriate interventions.
A Student Success Team is comprised of parents and other individuals who have an impact on a student's school experience. Each team member is dedicated to helping the student succeed in school. Participants typically include parents, teachers, a school administrator and other appropriate school specialists such as a literacy teacher or counselor. Students may be invited to the SST meeting for part of the time depending on their age and the topics being discussed.
The meetings are kept focused through the use of a recording chart, or structured note taking, that begins with student strengths. These records are provided to all participants at the end of the meeting and a follow up meeting date is set. The clarity and structure provided by the chart allows most SST meetings to be completed in around 45 minutes.
Some of the things discussed will include your child’s strengths and preferences, relevant developmental information, school history, areas of concern, past accommodations or interventions that have been tried, and an action plan for next steps.
