It is with great enthusiasm that I share information regarding the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The CCSS were adopted by 46 states including California. The CCSS will replace the California State Standards in use for the past 15 years. CCSS include standards for Mathematics, English Language Arts and Literacy in various content ares for students in kindergarten through grade 12. CCSS provide information on what students are expected to learn at each level so students, teachers, administrators and parents all have clarity.
The CCSS were developed to be relevant for our global economy. The authors focused on the cognitive skills and rigor (depth of knowledge) that students need to succeed in college and in workforce training programs. Critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication skills (referred to as the 4 C's) are also a major focus of the standards.

What comes next?:

  • 2013-2014 Woodside staff work with WestEd to transition curriculum plans from State Standards to CCCS
  • 2013-2014 Woodside continues to implement the MARS (Mathematical Assessment Resource Service) exam in mathematics
  • 2013-2014 Woodside continues to implement Readers and Writers Workshop to address CCSS literacy
More exciting updates will be forthcoming.
