January is diversity and inclusion month in TK. We learn that every human being is a unique and special individual, but that we all have a lot in common. We celebrate our skin color, hair and bodies as being unique and beautiful. We read stories about diversity in our families, community and the world. Sesame Street is a favorite resource for fun songs such as “The Color of Me”, “What I Am” and “ I Love My Hair”.
TK students mixed colors to match their unique skin tones when creating self portraits this month. Using mirrors and describing words, they were able to identify what makes their appearance special. “my skin is the color of a lion’s mane” “my eyes and hair are the same color”. Our class fills our SEL tree of life each month with words of wisdom. This month, the students thought about what makes them special. Some students thought about how they look, but others wrote “I am always kind” or “ I am an artist” . Teaching diversity and celebrating our uniqueness builds confidence and strengthens our learning community.
