"Great deeds are usually wrought with great risk" - Herodotus

I was born and raised in the beautiful Napa Valley. I have an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, and I received my master’s degree in Educational Administration from Santa Clara University. Along with my amazing wife and two wonderful girls, we call Portola Valley home.

I began my tenure at Woodside School in 2001, and I spent eight years as a Middle School social studies teacher.  I transitioned to administration and spent five years as the K-8th grade Assistant Principal, and I am very excited to begin my third year as the Middle School Principal.  In addition to my Middle School duties, I will teach social studies to all 6th grade students.

Learning about ancient history is vital in students gaining knowledge of how the world works today.  From the dawn of civilization to the origins of our modern democracy, this course provides students with the foundation to develop as learners and gain the skills necessary to succeed in today's world.

My teaching philosophy is simple.  Kids should have fun while learning.  I have very high expectations for all students, and I believe firmly that every child can reach beyond their goals.  In addition to learning about ancient civilizations, my focus is to help broaden each student's general level of overall educational skills. This includes a deep understanding of research (e.g., primary documents, citations, etc.), writing, speaking, listening, and organization.  In other words, the skills students will rely on for future success.

I believe in a collaborative approach.  Each student's needs are different and require special attention.  By working closely with each student and his or her family, we can work together to reach beyond our expectations.
