Welcome to the beginning of another productive and successful year at Woodside School!
This year is an incredible opportunity for you to learn and grow, and I am so excited to be your guide on our journey through language and literature. We will read new books and explore different forms of writing that will broaden your language skills, and strengthen your critical thinking and communication abilities. The activities that we do in this class will challenge and engage you, and I have no doubt that you will excel beyond all expectations!
As I eagerly anticipate getting to know you very well this year, I want to begin by telling you a little about myself. I grew up in the Bay Area, and eventually went on to UC Davis, where I received my B.A. in English literature, theory, and criticism, and then my Master of Arts in Education. Reading and writing have been my passions for as long as I can remember, and I love talking about and sharing books with everyone I meet. When I’m not lost in a new book, I love hiking with my Weimaraner, Kailey, and taking in all of the beauty that exists in this wonderful corner of the world. On weekends, I love cheering on Bay Area sports teams and exploring new restaurants and types of cuisine. I became an educator because of my own love and appreciation for learning, and I bring this passion for knowledge to my classroom each and every day, inspiring my students to become life-long learners. I strive to use research and reflection to measure student success in the classroom and provide students with the highest quality education. I am so happy to be back at Woodside School for another exciting year, and I know that I am going to truly enjoy teaching each and every one of my students, and building connections with their families.
Both parents and students should always feel welcome to email me with any questions or concerns. I care deeply about my students, and will do anything that it takes to help them succeed. My door is always open, whether you need help with homework, advice, or just want to talk. Parents might like to know that my curriculum is rigorous, and my expectations are high, because I seek to prepare my students to leave middle school completely ready for a successful high school experience. My lessons focus on fostering an appreciation of literature, as well as encouraging an ability to navigate and use the English language practically and appropriately in the forums that students may encounter in education and beyond graduation. My curriculum is guided by the Common Core State Standards, as well as the Writing Workshop methodology out of Columbia Teacher’s College, and my instruction is based on the theory of educating the whole student, encouraging their growth as healthy, happy, and knowledgeable individuals. Throughout the learning process, I will support students and differentiate lessons to give each student instruction that is tailored to his or her needs. I look forward to an exciting year of growth and development, and I am thrilled to work with you and your child this year!
