San Mateo County STEM Fair Update
The County STEM Fair event has been canceled. However, the judging process will continue but will be assessed and judged remotely via videos from student participants. More information to follow.

Middle School Student Council Candidate Forms Due — March 6
Candidates for Middle School Student Council Officer positions: please be sure to turn in your applications to the school office by the end of the day this Friday, March 6th. 

Middle School Conferences & Minimum Days — March 19 & 20
The Middle School will be holding teacher-initiated conferences on the March 19 & 20 minimum days. Since these will take place at the teachers’ discretion, please keep an eye out for invites. Please feel free to reach out to any teacher with questions. 

MARS Testing — March 2 - 12
All students will take the 2020 MARS assessment during the first two weeks in March with specific dates and times provided by your child’s teacher. To ensure all students receive a consistent and comfortable testing environment, all students must arrive on time and appointments or absences scheduled outside of this testing window. Questions? Contact your child’s teacher or Ms. Bowdoin.

End of Trimester 2 — Thursday, March 12th
Trimester 2 will conclude on Thursday, March 12th, but please note that the final deadlines to turn in late or missing work may be before that date.  PowerSchool will not be accessible to students or parents/guardians the following week. Middle School Progress Reports

Mid-trimester progress reports were sent home with students at the end of the day 02/13, so please check with your student if you haven't seen it already. The trimester ends Thursday, 03/12, so your student still has time to take or retake tests and turn in late or missing work during teachers’ office hours. Woodside’s Middle School STEAM Fair 
Congratulations to all the students who participated in this year’s STEAM Fair. It was incredibly inspiring to see all the wonderful projects come to fruition from our innovative, creative, and thoughtful Middle School Students. Well done, everyone!

Math Acceleration Info & Parent Meeting
Every 6th grade student will receive a 6th grade Math Acceleration form on Tuesday, February 25, the day after we return from break, to take home, complete, and return to their math teachers by Tuesday, March 3. In addition, the math team and administration will host an informational meeting on Tuesday, February 25 at 6:00 pm in Room 33. This meeting is not mandatory; however, if your child is considering the option of further acceleration, your presence is highly encouraged.   
 
8th Grade Washington D.C. Parent Mtg — Wed., March 11; 6pm; school library
There is a mandatory parent meeting for all 8th grade parents on the evening of March 11th to review all the logistics and necessary paperwork for the trip to Washington D.C.. It is crucial that every family receives this info prior to departure. Students will receive relevant information during school and do not need to attend this meeting. Please contact Jennifer Pedersen if your child has any dietary restrictions or special medical needs for this trip.

Mark your calendar to attend this Friday's movie night featuring "Wall-E" hosted by the MS Woodside Student Council. There will be snacks, pizza, and beverages for sale. Tickets will only be on sale at the door.

STEAM Fair — Thursday, February 6th, 3:30-7:00pm
This year’s Middle School STEAM Fair will be held on Thursday, February 6th in the Community Gym. The students will conduct interviews from 3:30-5:00 p.m., followed by an Open House from 6:00-7:00 p.m.
 
Middle School Valentine's Dance — Fri., Feb. 7; 7:00-9:30pm; Sellman
Mark your calendar for our next Middle School dance with the theme of Valentine's Day!
 
Middle School BBQ — Lunar New Year This Fri., Jan. 24; lunchtime Celebrate the Lunar New Year with lunch provided for all 6-8 graders from Chef Kwan’s. We need 4-5 volunteers to help with set up and lunch service — contact Claire Pollioni if you can help.

8th Grade Parents: High School Recommendations Update
The Woodside staff has been working hard to ensure that all high school recommendations have been written and sent to the schools that parents and students requested. Please log into your parent portals to check that everything is in order on your end. If there appears to be any recommendations still pending, please let Jennifer Pedersen (formerly Mull) know as soon as possible. 
 
1st trimester Report Cards
Second trimester has started, and the first trimester report cards will arrive at the students’ homes soon.

Movie Night — December 13th, 5:30 - 7:00pm, Sellman
The Woodside Student Council will be hosting a movie night in Sellman. It features a viewing of “Home Alone” that will start at 5:30 pm and end around 7:00 pm when the movie ends. Tickets are $10 dollars. Pizza and popcorn will be available for $5 each. 

Middle School Talent Show — February 5th
All Middle School students are invited to participate in the Talent Show on February 5th. Interested students must turn in the sign up form

Middle School Grade Dance — Friday, Dec. 6th; 7-9:30pm
Our Middle School will host their first official dance for 7th and 8th graders only this Friday, December 6 with the theme of "Hollywood Glamour"! The dance will start at 7pm and end at 9:30 pm. $15 per student at the door and students will not be able to leave campus until the dance is over. There will be some snacks inside and the bathrooms plus water fountains will be open during the time. Permission and Guest forms (below) are due no later than 1pm this Friday. Learn more HERE.

 All 4th and 5th grade parents are welcome to join us for Meet the Middle School in Wildcats for an informative event focusing on Woodside School’s Middle School Program. 
 
Middle School Bridge Program Launch & Overview
Thursday, October 31st 
The middle school launched its mentoring program, called the Bridge Program, with a series of events planned by the Woodside Student Council. The program’s mission, to “promote future success in the whole child by connecting the development of academic skills with social consciousness and responsibility,” will be met through its executive functioning-based curriculum and interpersonal bond-building structures. Students will meet with their Bridge Group on a triweekly basis throughout their middle school career, building connections with group members while simultaneously expanding their executive functioning skills through the curriculum. Bridge Groups themselves will be grouped into cross grade level family groups each year. These groups will engage in community building activities and friendly competition. Middle School Halloween Festivities
Thursday, October 31st 1:15-2:30 p.m.
All middle school students wishing to dress up for Halloween at school should bring their costumes to school to change into after lunch. Students should not wear their costumes to school. Please also refrain from bringing accessories to costumes that may be regarded as a weapon. Students will return to their 8th period class once the Halloween festivities have concluded.

Upcoming No School Days
Friday, Nov. 1st, Monday, Nov. 11th, and the week of November 25th
There will be no school for students on Friday, November 1st. This is a Teacher Work Day. There will also be no school held on Monday, November 11th as the school will observe Veteran’s Day. The school will observe Thanksgiving during the entire week of November 25th.

6th Grade Marin Overnight Parent Information Meeting
Monday, November 4th 6:00-6:30pm in Rm 24
6th grade parents are encouraged to attend the Marin Overnight Trip information session in Ms. Parker’s room. Topics to be covered include a trip overview, presentation of the packing list, and a Q&A session. Parents who are unable to attend but would like the information may contact Ms. Parker directly. 

End of Trimester 1
Friday, November 15th
The first trimester will come to a close on Friday, November 15th. All students should refer to their schedules to identify any course changes (i.e.: electives) that will occur the following week. The gradebook will close on Friday for students and parents. The specific date of when report cards will be sent home will be updated soon.

Fall MS Parent-Teacher Conferences - October 8, 9, 17 & 18
Fall Parent-Teachers conferences are scheduled on four minimum days in October. Please sign up for conferences with your child's Middle School teachers.

REMINDER — Minimum Days

Due to Parent-Teacher Conferences, we will have four minimum days in October. The first two will be held on Oct. 8th and 9th. The second two will be on Oct. 17th and 18th.

Garden Fest

Tues., October 15; after school 

GardenFest is next Tuesday starting at 2:30pm for parents, TK and Kinder and then at 3:10pm for everyone else. Kids love searching for annual favorites and treats. Riveropolis returns with their social, play and science river. Come support our school garden program!


Introducing!
The middle school humanities classes are excited to introducing a new assessment tool: TurnItIn! This platform will allow students the opportunity to more effectively self-assess prior to submission, as well as allow teachers to provide more timely, targeted feedback. If you haven’t already, please return the permission form that was sent home with your child last week.

Back To School Night is coming up! Please join us on Thursday, September 12th for the Middle School classroom rotations from 7:00 to 8:22pm and meet the Middle School specialists in Sellman from 6:30 to 7pm. More information will be sent out soon.

PowerSchool
 A letter with both the parent and student usernames and passwords for PowerSchool has been provided to all families. Please refer to it to access PowerSchool. 

Student Supplies
Student supplies for the 2019-20 school year have arrived. All Middle School students who have opted to have the school order these items will be able to pick up their items on Monday, August 26th at 12:30 p.m. (after students eat lunch) in Room 35.

Welcome Back from the MS Deans

Dear Woodside Middle School Families,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! We hope you’ve had an exciting summer. The three of us have the privilege and honor of serving as your new Middle School Deans. Señor Wickstrom is the 6th Grade Dean, Ms. Bowdoin is the 7th Grade Dean, and Ms. Mull is the 8th Grade Dean. We are really looking forward to seeing you all on August 21st, and supporting you throughout this upcoming school year. As our Superintendent, Mr. Frank, stated in his note above, pertinent information will be coming soon in the summer mailing packet. Please carefully review this  packet and let us know if you have any questions. In the meantime, enjoy the rest of your summer vacation and get ready for a great school year!
