Our Pre-K Classroom at Woodside Preschool is designed for the year before the children enter kindergarten or transitional kindergarten. By this age, most children have a lot to say about what’s on their minds and what they are working on. We invite children to create and play, then we take their questions and expressions and delve deeper into their interests.
This emergent curriculum creates a framework and pathway for our projects and studies throughout the year, but every day children also get opportunities to collaborate and solve problems socially and cognitively. All of the daily activities promote development of the whole child in all aspects and also help prepare them for kindergarten and beyond. The children in Pre-K enjoy the many resources on campus as well including the library, the garden, the design lab and the science lab. We also do activities in small groups that give the teachers more opportunities to support children’s learning and development and closely monitor their growth. Each child’s development and progress is discussed in detail with parents in the spring.
A child enters the classroom and has the choice every day of dramatic play, art, puzzles, blocks, books and more. The act of making choices helps build confidence and comfort in the school environment. Teachers observe children in their work and play–supporting and extending with questions and observations. In addition to introducing children to academic concepts and working with them on important skills, teachers help children learn to manage their emotions and communicate effectively with peers.
Our teachers are very observant and highly experienced and skilled at supporting children in all facets of development. We work closely with families in a genuine partnership. We all share the same goals for the children: that they enjoy their time at school, learn to be part of a community, and leave Pre-K prepared for their next educational step.
