Transitional Kindergarten Dates for 2023-2024 School Year — April 2

As you may know, the state of California has mandated that Transitional Kindergarten be offered in all public schools.  Beginning before the 2021-2022 school year, school districts had to offer Transitional Kindergarten to eligible students based on birthdays that were expanded from September 2 to December 2.  During the current 2022-2023 school year, school districts expanded the date to February 2.  This five-year expansion plan is a way for school districts to ease into an entirely new grade level.  The eventual landing pad is 2025-2026, when school districts must offer Transitional Kindergarten to all students who turn four by September 1.

Although the Woodside School District has offered a Transitional Kindergarten program for many years before the state mandate came into play, like many other districts, we have moved the enrollment dates on a year-to-year basis.  Some districts have gone “all in” and are already running a full Transitional Kindergarten program that allows four-year-olds born before September 1 to attend.  Woodside has not made the full transition to the September 1 birthday expansion, for a variety of reasons.   They include the staffing costs from additional Transitional Kindergarten classrooms due to increased enrollment, the lack of proper facilities for additional Transitional Kindergarten classrooms, and the fact that as a basic aid school district, the Transitional Kindergarten program remains unfunded by the state of California.

The Board of Trustees decided to move the Transitional Kindergarten enrollment birthdate for the 2023-2024 school year to April 2.  The Board of Trustees has also decided to accelerate the full implementation timeline the following year, and beginning in the 2024-2025 school year, all four-year-olds born before September 1 will be enrolled in Transitional Kindergarten.

The Board of Trustees and the administration feel that because of the economic uncertainty surrounding Transitional Kindergarten’s funding and a lack of proper facilities, one more year is needed to plan for one or two more classrooms that can be dedicated to fit the needs of the fully expanded Transitional Kindergarten program.  Beginning in the 2024-2025 school year, all four-year-olds born before September 1 will be eligible for Transitional Kindergarten; however, up until that point, we will only allow students who fall in line with the proper birthdate to enroll in Transitional Kindergarten for the next school year.  We are aware that there are some who fail to meet the April 2 birthdate.  Unfortunately, we will not be able to accommodate students in TK who do not meet the April 2 requirements.
