Dear Lower School Families,2017-18 Staff photo of Melissa Bowdoin

I am thrilled to officially write to you as the new Lower School Principal for Woodside Elementary School. It is truly an honor to continue as a member of this amazing community. As we’ve all experienced, Covid-19 has limited the number of interactions I am able to have with the staff and families. Building connections is of the utmost importance to me as I navigate this new role, and I am looking for creative and feasible ways to connect with you. Please look for future invitations from me as we approach the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year.
I come to you with fifteen years of educational experience, as well as vast experience in school leadership. I started my educational career as a 1st grade teacher at a school in San Jose. After many years, I decided to expand my knowledge of the elementary programs and accepted a job as one of the 4th grade teachers here at Woodside. Opportunity knocked a few years later, and I was able to accept a position teaching the subject that is very near and dear to my heart: Science. Throughout the last few years as a teacher, I obtained many credentials; currently the most important, my credential and Masters in Educational Leadership. I am thrilled to continue to put into practice all that I gained in my programs.
This summer, I worked alongside the rest of the Woodside Administration Team (Steve Frank, Marta Batlle, Jenn Pedersen, and Harlin Hansen), as well as many of our teachers and parents to plan for the upcoming school year. I am immensely grateful for this team, as we navigate an unprecedented time in modern-day education. As I continue to plan for the school year, I am also getting to know each grade-level team and their programs, and WOW! Our students are in such capable and exceptional hands. I am one lucky principal! In addition to the amazing teachers, I am equally grateful for the families of Woodside. I am looking forward to cultivating partnerships with you all.

I recognize the importance of my role as one of Woodside’s school leaders, and please know that I acknowledge the responsibilities and tasks that lie ahead, especially in the eye of a pandemic. I am firmly dedicated to my first year as your Lower School Principal to immerse myself fully into our school and community. As we near closer to the start of the 2020-2021 school year, I will continue to support our teachers, our students, and families to ensure we are successful in this journey we are about to embark on. We are in this together, and we will come out of this stronger, both as learners and as a community! I look forward to meeting all of you and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns, or ideas you wish to share with me.
Warm regards,
Melissa Bowdoin
