Hello and welcome to Upper School Math with Mrs. McManis. I am thrilled to work with you to ensure that this is a rewarding and productive year of learning math. I am grateful to be a part of this dynamic, energetic and supportive community of students, parents and colleagues.

I graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics and Economics in the spring of 2012. Shortly after earning my Bachelor’s degree, I returned to school to pursue my single-subject teaching credential at Notre Dame de Namur University while simultaneously working here as a preschool teacher. With these two pieces of paper in hand, I set off into the wonderful world of teaching, beginning by teaching 7th grade math and Algebra at Burlingame Intermediate School before returning to WES.

Outside of the classroom, I enjoy backpacking, swimming, reading, traveling and spending time with family and friends. I currently reside in La Honda with my husband and our dog-sized cat Cairo. This summer I went on hikes, did some whitewater rafting, spent time camping with my three brothers and family at Jedediah Smith in the Redwoods, and planted a big garden - which was particularly enjoyed by many animals!

Math is everywhere and I love sharing the wonders of math with my students. This year I have the opportunity to teach both 6th and 7th grade math and Algebra which are foundational courses for future studies of mathematics. I believe that math is like a sport, in order to get truly good you have to practice. For this reason, I like to spend as much time as possible practicing math with students in the classroom. Students will master both procedural fluency and conceptual understanding through problem-solving and class discussion. Our math program is rigorous and I am confident that you are all capable of tremendous growth with effort, dedication and teamwork!

I am so excited to be your math coach this year and I am looking forward to seeing you energized as your math confidence grows. If you have any questions throughout the school year please do not hesitate to contact me.
