Our lower school teachers asked their students what it means to be Safe, Respectful, and Responsible in different locations around the school. Students agreed that they needed to walk on campus with the exception of the blacktop and fields. They agreed that they need to accept their place in the lunch line and not offer or ask for line cuts!
Mr. Hurley organized all of their ideas and made posters that use positive language to describe these behaviors, also known as The Wildcat Way. Mr. Hurley and Ms. Jones shared these posters with lower school students on the first day of school.
When students consistently exhibit these behaviors, or go above and beyond in demonstrating Safety, Respect, and Responsibility, they may earn a Wildcat Way Card from an adult on the campus. Students bring the cards to the office and place them in a special drawer. Each Friday, Mr. Hurley goes to the grade level lunch areas and pulls 2-3 cards from the drawer. These lucky winners get a coupon at the Friday Ice Cream Store. All of the cards will be returned to the students to bring home and show you.
This reward system is part of our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) plan that our school’s Whole Child Committee designed last school year as part of our Strategic Plan’s Goal 1. We know that children respond well to positive reinforcement and are asking adults to give out these cards frequently.
