Hello and welcome to Upper School Math with Mrs. McManis. I am thrilled to work with you to ensure that this is a rewarding and productive year of learning math. I am grateful to be a part of this dynamic, energetic and supportive community of students, parents and colleagues.
I graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics and Economics in the spring of 2012. Shortly after earning my Bachelor’s degree I returned to school to pursue my single subject teaching credential at Notre Dame de Namur University while simultaneously working here as a preschool teacher. With these two pieces of paper in hand I set off into the wonderful world of teaching, beginning by teaching 7th grade math and Algebra at Burlingame Intermediate School before returning to WES.
Outside of the classroom I enjoy backpacking, swimming, reading, traveling and spending time with family and friends. I currently reside in La Honda with my husband and our dog sized cat Cairo.   This summer I went on hikes, did some whitewater rafting, spent time camping with my three brothers and family at Jedediah Smith in the Redwoods, and planted a big garden - which was particularly enjoyed by many animals!
Math is everywhere and I love sharing the wonders of math with my students. This year I have the opportunity to teach both 6th and 7th grade math and Algebra which are foundational courses for future studies of mathematics. I believe that math is like a sport, in order to get truly good you have to practice. For this reason I like to spend as much time as possible practicing math with students in the classroom. Students will master both procedural fluency and conceptual understanding through problem solving and class discussion. Our math program is rigorous and I am confident that you are all capable of tremendous growth with effort, dedication and teamwork!
I am so excited to be your math coach this year and I am looking forward to seeing you energized as your math confidence grows. If you have any questions throughout the school year please do not hesitate to contact me.
