San Mateo County Libraries are excited to offer a virtual visit with graphic novelist Pedro Martin on Friday, October 17 at 9:00 am! This visit is geared toward 4th-8th graders. This virtual program will be approximately 45 minutes in length, including a presentation and short Q&A. We will also have a limited number of FREE copies of Pedro's graphic novel Mexikid to share with SMCL-jurisdiction participating classes.
Pedro Martín is the author and illustrator of Newbery Honor, Eisner Award, & Pura Belpré-winning Mexikid: a Graphic Memoir. Having grown up in a large sharecropping family, Pedro and his nine siblings were raised in the strawberry fields of the Monterey Bay Area, CA. He completed his graphic design degree at San Jose State University and worked his way up from Hallmark Greetings artist, to art studio manager, to Master Artist. After retiring from Hallmark, he pursued his dream of writing a graphic memoir. He now lives in Kansas City, Missouri with his wife and dogs.

This virtual program will be approximately 45 minutes in length, including a presentation and short Q&A. We will also have a limited number of FREE copies of John's picture book This Moment Is Special: A Dia de Muertos Story to share with SMCL-jurisdiction participating classes.
John Parra is an award-winning illustrator and author known for his vibrant and culturally rich picture books. Not only has he won three Pura Belpré Honors, two Golden Kite Awards, and a The Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children's Book Award, his artwork has been featured in various public projects, such as the New York subway system’s MTA Artcard Birdhouse Subways, as well as six US Forever Postage Stamps in the Delicioso series. He’s also illustrated well-known children’s books including One is a Piñata, Round is a Tortilla, Green is a Chile Pepper, and Waiting for the Biblioburro. He’s written books of his own, Growing an Artist: The Story of a Landscaper and His Son, and his latest book, This Moment is Special. He is a graduate of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and he currently resides in Queens, New York, with his wife, Maria.
