Reducing Speed Limit to 15 mph in front of Woodside Elementary School

The Town of Woodside has updated the speed limit signs in front of Woodside Elementary School for both directions to 15 mph. The Town notified the San Mateo County Superior Court and Sherrif’s Office of this update. The Town will put out a notice on our website and other communication platforms to update the community. Woodside moved to a 15 MPH speed limit in front of Woodside Elementary School to resolve dangerous traffic safety risks, close calls, and speeding drivers on a highly trafficked stretch of Woodside Road.

Why the Speed Limit Was Lowered

Speeding Drivers: Traffic surveys conducted by town staff revealed that the average driver was routinely traveling much faster than the previously posted 25 MPH limit.
Pedestrian Infrastructure Gaps: The opposite side of the street lacks a sidewalk. Parents, children, and residents pushing strollers are forced to walk directly in the bike lane.
Dangerous Driving Behavior: Parents reported multiple "close calls". Aggressive drivers were even observed trying to pass stopped vehicles by overtaking them through the bike lanes where children walk and cycle.
Community Pressure: The Woodside Town Council voted to approve the change following an influx of urgent petitions and requests from concerned neighborhood parents.

Because Woodside Road is a state highway, the Town Council officially passed a resolution to request Caltrans to implement the 15 MPH drop. The timing of this effort coincided with the passage of California's Assembly Bill 382, a legislative overhaul expanding a local municipality's power to lower and expand safe school zones.
