Congrats to NorCal Little League Champions Alpine Little League 12U All-Stars!
Woodside Elementary's 6th grader Garrett W. and 7th grader Simeon O.-M. recently joined 10 other Alpine LIttle League baseball all-stars on a historic run at the Little League World Series. Garrett and Simeon's team did something no other 12U Alpine Little League has ever done before — they represented all of Northern California by going 12-0 in District (District 52), then won Sectionals and then move on to the state championships to become Little League NorCal Champions! This is the first state title ever for Alpine, and only the 4th state title in history for any team in District 52, which includes all of San Mateo County. They've been playing since the 1950s, proving how incredible this achievement truly was!
With the NorCal title, Alpine advanced to the West Region Tournament held at the Little League Western Region Complex in San Bernardino. Games were played in Al Houghton Stadium (seating capacity of 8K) and televised on ESPN. Alpine beat Arizona, but unfortunately lost to Southern Califonrnia and Hawaii to end their incredible summer just shy of representing the entire West Region of the US. The winning team advanced to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA.
Worth noting: Garrett and Simeon both contributed with clutch RBIs, hits and stunning plays at second base, shortstop and outfield. Woodside Elementary School and the entire Alpine Little League community (Woodside, Portola Valley and Menlo Park) are so proud of them!). Congratulations Garrett and Simeon, their teammates, coaches and parents!
Lower School Celebrates the 100th Day of School! On February 4th, Woodside School was all abuzz with laughter and well-wishes as we celebrated our 100th day of school! TK, Kindergarten, and the 1st grade created masterpieces of 100 items of their choosing. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades all celebrated the 100th day of school with fun writing prompts, math activities, and watched the 1st graders marching their way up and down the hallways in their 100th Day Parade! Check out some photos below:
Many of our 6th-8th grade students had the opportunity last Wednesday, January 20th to watch the Inauguration all happen LIVE during their classes. Students had the opportunity to see history in the making and to learn more about our nation and the voting system. So many of our students and teachers were particularly impressed with 23-year old Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman's Inauguration poem entitled "The Hill We Climb."
In the days that followed, students had powerful discussions in their ELA classes, where they further analyzed Gorman's poetry and the themes behind the work of this young role model. She reminded us that "there is always light, if only we're brave enough to see it; if only we're brave enough to be it." Check out the video of her powerful and inspirational poem HERE. We are so grateful to our dedicated teachers for giving students this incredible opportunity to learn more about our democracy!
WES Alumni Zoe Magnussen stars in Disney+ documentary “On Pointe”
Zoe (and sister Poppy) Magnussen attended WES until the family moved to NYC to pursue ballet dreams several years ago. Poppy would have been an 8th grader this year with the WES Class of 2021. Zoe is featured in the six-episode Disney+ documentary “On Pointe” about the School of American Ballet and New York City Ballet and the 2019 production of the Nutcracker.
Local musician (and WES dad) Alec Lytle has the #1 folk song in the USA for two weeks running. I’m sure this incredible accomplishment is nearly as meaningful to him and his wife Priscilla as hosting the “We love Woodside” concert in May. :) If you haven’t already, download his album Remains of Sunday, it’s a wonderful listen! Congratulations to Alec Lytle and Them Rounders.
